I have been really skeptical of using Twitter, because I feel like it’s just a big waste of my time.
Well, I still use it and encourage you to do the same. I mean, it has value and can be useful.
Ron,
I agree with your opinion of Twitter, for the most part. Maybe the problem is the way we view social media sites. Maybe they are just the tools to construct the building, not the building itself. Being on Twitter isn’t going to solve any problems or boost your schools enrollment, but its presence is valuable for a person who already feels a connection to that institution.
Oh, and I believe everyone wants to know where I am, what I’m doing, and who I know.
I think you make a really valid point about the way we view social networking in general. People tend to view them as the ‘end-all, be-all’ magic bullet that will solve everything. But that’s just wrong. I like to explain to people that my job is to use the web to highlight the work we’re already doing. If we’re not producing quality, we’ll have nothing to market. It’s just another medium to communicate with people in the same way we use TV, radio or the phone…but I don’t think we’ve reached that level of acceptance yet.
And yes, of course. Why wouldn’t they want to know my every move? I mean, if I’m important to them why not?
